Mullein is found on roadsides across the country, but its use in European medicine goes as far back as the Greek physician Dioscorides, who practiced in Rome in the 1st century AD. Its primary uses, then and now, are the treatment of lung conditions and respiratory infections.
Mullein also appears in countless folktales, ranging from its use as “nature’s toilet paper” to apotropaic purposes — that which wards off evil spirits and bad luck. Its magical qualities included being able to instill courage, provide protection, and attract love. It was believed that wearing mullein could ensure fertility, and keep potentially dangerous animals at bay when hiking in the wilderness.
Mullein was introduced to the Americans by early colonists, when it was incorporated into Native American healing traditions as well. The root was made into necklaces for teething Abenaki infants; the Cherokee applied the leaves as a poultice for cuts and swollen glands.
Mullein is a very potent anti-inflammatory, and is effective against many types of disease-causing bacteria. It’s great for fighting off colds and allergies and has been used recently in herbal smoking blends — it was even smoked in the past to treat sore throats and lung congestion, and has even been used to help smokers’ lungs and wean oneself off of tobacco. Mullein reduces the formation of mucus and stimulates the coughing up of phlegm.
Mullein is a mild nervine, having a calming effect on inflamed or irritated nerves; it can help the body relax before sleep. It is antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, and can also help heal wounds and treat diarrhea.
